80 North: Sacramento, The Citizen Hotel

The Citizen Hotel 926 J St./10th St., downtown, 916-447-2700; http://www.citizenhotel.com/. 198 rooms; 14 stories. Fitness center. Room service. Valet parking $25. This stylish boutique hotel operates within what was the high-rise Cal West Life Insurance building from 1926 (the year it was built) to 2004. Typical rooms are smallish and decorated smartly with tightly striped carpeting and gold-striped wall paper--appearing much like a charming inverted square hat box. Accents include framed original political cartoons and a floor lamp bearing a shade printed with the state constitution. The bed is made with comfortable Italian white-on-white striped cotton sheets and topped with a white duvet.

Just off the lobby, edgy Grange restaurant ((916) 492-4430; grangesacramento.com. B M-Sat, L M-F, D daily, SunBr; $$.) operates in a high-ceilinged industrial-style space with massive windows. The sophisticated menu features local ingredients and changes daily. The adjacent Scandal bar and lounge creates "culinary" cocktails and serves desserts.
