St. Helena: Wydown Hotel; hotel review

Wine Country

Wydown Hotel

1424 Main St., downtown, (707) 963-5100.  12 rooms.  Continental breakfast.  Free parking.  No pets.

Located at the edge of the town’s main shopping street and next door to the town park, this outwardly dark-grey 1886 Victorian building has been gutted so you might be a bit surprised to find inside the Wydown Hotel with a lighter edgy, contemporary style.  The lobby is particularly spacious, with several couches and a table bearing newspapers and magazines.

All guest rooms are on the second floor, and an elevator helps lift any luggage up there.  Beds are made with smooth, ironed white cotton linens and duvet cover, and topped with a posh faux fur throw.  Unfortunately, no bathtubs are available, but a mini fridge is stocked with complimentary still and sparkling water plus fruit drinks.

A complimentary breakfast is served in The Tea Room adjacent to the lobby.  In the evening, many good restaurants are within walking distance, and additional stellar Wine Country establishments are a short drive away.  A complimentary pass to Health Spa Napa Valley (it is 3 blocks away) is provided to guests and allows access to their fitness center and a 25-yard outdoor heated lap pool and hot tub, as well as to eucalyptus steam rooms and a discount on spa treatments.

The well-curated resale shop La Boheme operates adjacent to the hotel and can be entered through the lobby.  It is filled with nicely curated merchandise that includes bargain treasures, and proceeds benefit Napa Valley Hospice and Adult Day Services.

St. Helena: Las Alcobas, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Napa Valley + Acacia House; hotel review + restaurant review

1915 Main St., just north of town, (707) 963-7000.  68 rooms.  Pool.  Exercise room; full-service spa.  Full breakfast; restaurant.  No pets.  Adults-only, age 17 and older.  Free valet parking.

Built in 2017, this sister property to Las Alcobas in Mexico City features sleek new construction, plus a B&B conversion on the top floor of an existing guest house mansion and a restaurant conversion on the ground floor.  Located adjacent to the Beringer vineyards, the pool at Las Alcobas, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Napa Valley has a glass fence that allows viewing the adjacent vineyards.  Bicycles are available to borrow.  Guest rooms are spread through three contemporary grey-wood buildings.  All have wine-infused toiletries by the local Napa Soap Company, and in-room drinks and snacks are complimentary.  All guest rooms have a terrace or balcony with a fire pit and a vineyard view.  The B&B rooms vary a bit, and all feature a free-standing soaking tub in the middle of each room.

Acacia House

(707) 963-9004.  L-D daily; $$$+.

Situated within a dramatic 1907 white Colonial Revival mansion, which offers bed & breakfast rooms on the top floors, the new Acacia Houserestaurant features a selection of small and large plates designed to complement a diverse Napa Valley wine list.

The kitchen also provides hotel guests with breakfast as well as pool-side snacks, room service, and picnic baskets.  The expensive but satisfying repast served here surpassed my expectations, and the knowledgeable, attentive, and informative servers greatly enhanced the experience.  The meal begins with a choice of complimentary still or sparkling house-prepared water and a platter of housemade olive bread.  The chef started us off with an amuse consisting of a tiny one-bite heirloom tomato with goat cheese.

Then our shaken and frothy Margaritas Las Alcobas arrived in unsalted tulip glasses (the sea salt was in the foam).  Choosing from the summer menu, we began with a delicate and refreshing chilled heirloom melon soup enhanced with bits of habanero chili and mint.  The meat of the soup--chopped melon--arrived in a bowl, followed by a server who dramatically poured liquid over it from a spouted copper kettle.  Other starters I would have liked to try include burrata with apricots and almonds, and iced vegetables crudites with seasonal dip.

For mains he chose a Cornish game hen prepared deconstructed roulade-style, cut in rounds with roasted grapes and turnips and topped with a colorful sprinkling of blue cornflower petals.

I was delighted with a crispy Iberico pork schnitzel surrounded by a spectacularly tasty ranch dressing and topped with black caviar (I was informed that this dish is so tasty because it is prepared with black-footed pigs from Spain that are kept fat and happy with a diet of acorns).

We were well guided to pair a smooth Sherrer Pino Noir wine with the hen, and a Lagier Meredith Syrah boasting great legs with the schnitzel.  (Wines are local, and Opus 1 is an option if you are in the mood to splurge big time.)

Rigatoni, whole roasted eggplant, and kobe beef ribeye were among other options.  Coffee came with a choice of many milks.  For dessert, we shared a trio of assorted rectangular eclairs (the waitress encouraged us with that’s “the best one; you’re in for a treat!”).  One éclair was made with fresh peaches, another with blueberries and cream cheese, and the third with dark chocolate.

We sat outside on the expansive wraparound front porch--the perfect choice on a warm summer evening.

Seating in the contemporary interior manages to be cozy, and some tables have a view of the kitchen action.

Pop rock is piped throughout, keeping the ambiance upbeat in an unintrusive way.  In spite of this elegance, the atmosphere is Levis casual, but I was surprised to see some diners appear in short shorts and baseball caps.

St. Helena: Long Meadow Ranch; things to do + restaurant review

Wine Country

Long Meadow Ranch

738 Main St., (707) 963-4555 x161.  Tasting room; fee.

The historic Logan Ives House here, a restored Gothic Revival farmhouse, doubles as a tasting room and general store that sells farm products.  Olive oil samplings are also available (they press their own olives here from 100-year-old-trees found nowhere else).

The solar-powered winery-making facility--which is 98% rammed earth over a steel frame--for this family-owned and -operated winery is up in the Mayacamas Mountains in Rutherford and open only by special tour.  And the ranch itself is spread over many areas--including Pt. Reyes and Boonville--and produces organic wines and olive oils, hormone-free chickens, and grass-fed cows.  A small vegetable garden and seasonal farm stand is on site here, and an outdoor Cafe serves a limited menu.

Farmstead restaurant

(707) 963-9181.  L-D daily; $$$.

Farmstead restaurant operates within a repurposed barn and serves a farm-to-table menu of country food.  The menu is varied, but the Southern dishes are reputedly especially delicious.  Ingredients such as grass-fed beef, organic fruits and vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, and local honey originate on Long Meadow Ranch.  The wine list features well-priced selections, including Long Meadow Ranch wines--which have no markup--and corkage is just $2.  On one weekend, Julia Roberts ate here on Saturday and David Beckham on Sunday.

 Special experiences include:

●Chef's Table

This elegant communal dining experience begins with a glass of wine and a walk through the culinary garden to see what’s growing and will be on your plate.  Guests are seated at a shared tables with plenty of wine glasses, and then the parade of courses itemized on a chef-curated set menu start appearing.

The chef uses the best of what is in season from the farm and ranch, and pairs courses with ranch wines.

At my lunch experience, proceedings began with an olive oil tasting that included a unique Prato Lungo (Italian for “long meadow”) and an organic extra virgin pressed from four types of olives.  Lunch courses included a flavor bomb of a tomato-tuna-olive ball that was paired with a nice 2016 Anderson Valley Rose of Pinot Noir.

Then came a refined caviar melt over toast served with a smooth 2016 Pinot Gris with a slightly tart finish--my favorite wine of the day.

This was followed by braised romano beans with a ricotta gnudi dumpling topped with crispy shallots and a 2015 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir with red strawberry on the nose.

Then it was a brilliantly colored dish of brined, thick-cut heritage pork with creamed corn, mustard seeds, and pluots, served with a robust, slightly tannic 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dessert was dramatic marinated berries with ice cream crumble in a liquid nitrogen fog, paired with a nice 2013 Napa Valley Merlot.

This was an exceptional meal, but it was a disappointment that items were prepared in an adjacent room, not right in front of us.

●Mayacamas Estate Experience

For this tour, guests ride in a van up to the Mayacamas Estate mountain vineyards for a tour of the wine caves and a tasting of limited-production estate-grown wines.  Our tour began with a tasting of 2015 Rutherford Estate Sauvignon Blanc, which was the perfect selection for sipping while seated at tables in front of the winery featuring a lovely valley view.

All the wines we tasted were made from 100% of their varietal grapes and available only at the winery to tour participants and wine club members.  We moved inside the winery to sample more, including two olive oils, and for an excursion into the caves to see the barrels and the olive-crushing stone wheels.

We also enjoyed several art pieces, one of which was an original purple Andy Warhol cow.

A plank held housemade salamis, marinated olives, cheese, and almonds to enjoy with the wines:  a 2015 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Blanc; a 2013 Mayacamas Estate Sangiovese; a 2012 Mayacamas Estate Merlot grown from grapes on the hill here; an elegant 2013 Mayacamas Estate Cabernet Franc; and a 2013 E.J. Church Cabenert Sauvivon--the winery’s best.

Then it was back into the van for the ride back down to the farm.

St. Helena: The Model Bakery; restaurant review

Wine Country

The Model Bakery

1357 Main St., downtown, (707) 963-8192.  Daily 7am-6pm.

Among the delicious hand-formed breads baked in the 1920s-era brick-and-sand ovens at The Model Bakery are pain de vin (whole-wheat sourdough made with a starter derived from Napa Valley grape yeasts), sour rye, crusty sourdough, and both sweet baguettes and rounds.  Panini, mini-pizzas, and stuffed croissants make quick snacks, and old-fashioned cookies and biscotti are pleasing desserts.  For breakfast try the Morning Glory muffin, the bear claw, or their famous English muffins.  Coffee and espresso drinks are also available.  Cozy seating is provided inside and out for on-the-spot indulgence.

St. Helena: Olive oil tasting at Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co. + Olivier Napa Valley; things to do

Wine Country

Olive Oil Tasting

RUSTIC VERSION:

Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co.

835 Charter Oak Ave., (707) 963-4173.  Daily 8-5; in summer to 5:30.  Cash only.

Everything needed for a picnic is available inside this 100-year-old barn:  cheese, sausage, olives, bread sticks, focaccia, biscotti.  And if you’d like to eat on the spot, a tree-shaded picnic area with tables is provided right outside the Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co.  This Old World-style Italian deli also offers a variety of pastas, sauces, and dried mushrooms, plus very good housemade cold-pressed olive oil and red wine vinegar--all placed helter-skelter in barrels and on makeshift tables.  Prices are reasonable, tabs are tallied on the shopping bag, and a cigar box holds the change.  It's really quite unusual.
