In 1850, about 3,000 people lived here in Rough and Ready. A proposed government mining tax got townspeople angry enough to vote to secede from the Union. They named their town for the 12th President, Zachary Taylor, who was nicknamed “Old Rough & Ready.” The new republic lasted just three months.
A Secession Days Celebration occurs on the last Sunday in June and includes a pancake breakfast at the firehouse.
