127 1st St., (707) 805-0575. L-D daily.
Filling a long, narrow space, the refined Italian restaurant Bella Siena features a long bar in front, a spacious dining room with a spectacular bay view in back, and an outside patio with sheltering umbrellas. The focus is on fresh food and good service. Menu choices feature many family recipes, and all meals begin with bread and a super-delicious dipping sauce. The fixed-price lunch ($17.50) is a good way to sample the wares. I enjoyed a simple insalata mista that was both beautiful and delicious, and which blended well with my flavorful main course--penne con pollo made with small pieces of marinated chicken breast, sun-dried tomatoes, sweet corn, and a chipotle-basil cream sauce. The meal ended with a scoop of blackberry sorbet. More menu items I’d like to try in the future include calamari fritti, crab cake panini, wild mushroom ravioli, and most of all--pappardelle allo zafferano, made with homemade saffron pasta, prawns, wild mushrooms, fresh tomatoes, and artichoke hearts in a shrimp bisque sauce. Plenty more delights are on the menu, and you can also get a great Kobe beef burger.
On the waterfront behind the restaurant are two pieces of public art: “Light Harp” by Scott Zoog and “Neptune’s Daughter” by Lisa Reinertson.
More things to do in Benicia.
More ideas for exploring Northern California.
