918 1st St., (707) 361-5919. Tu-Sun 8am-6pm.
The spectacular One House Bakery produces an array of goodies that will knock your socks off. Think croissants and scones in many flavors, colorful fruit tartlets in vibrant colors, and cupcakes galore topped with a tall twist of buttercream frosting. They even have sticky toffee pudding (though I never order this anywhere because I already have the world’s best recipe for sticky toffee pudding). The menu includes French toast and a breakfast sandwich for breakfast, and sandwiches, pot pies, and salads for lunch. I stopped in for afternoon refreshment and selected a devil’s food cupcake with French vanilla buttercream frosting paired with a glass of sweet Sherry. It was divine. Next time I plan to try an almond croissant and a glass of Burnt Orange Chamomile Iced Tea. Seating is available inside, as well as outside by the sidewalk and--my favorite spot--in the back on a tree-sheltered deck. The kitchen is open to view, and a glass-sheltered area in back permits watching the bakers at work.
More things to do in Benicia.
More ideas for exploring Northern California.
