Located at the N car turnaround, and abutting the Great Highway and Ocean Beach just beyond, this casual corner cafe fits my list of places that feel like they are at the end of the world. Out there in the hinterlands, the Java Beach Cafe has a parklet, and a tiny, artsy mini park with more seating is just across the street from that. Seating on built-in wood benches, some with tables, is available inside, and a tiny bar in the back provides a few seats by the beer taps. On busy warm days, customers spill out to the great outdoors.

The simple menu offers baked goods as well as coffees, salads, and sandwiches. A large variety of coffees include a popular vanilla oat latte and a butterscotch latte, but a rich hot chocolate is another enticing option--all served in cups decorated with the colorful work of a local artist. Breakfast burritos are served until noon. Sandwiches include a massive Java Club sporting turkey or chicken with crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and mayo--usually on toasted sourdough, but not always. A side of potato chips is included. Bagels prepared many ways are also available. Not so hungry? Order up some Irish soda bread with butter and homemade jam. Items are packed wrapped to go, whether you go or not, so eating is picnic-like even indoors.
