When
built in 1928, this Gothic-Renaissance building was the tallest in town and one
of the city’s first skyscraper hotels.
Innovations at the time included an indoor golf course, ice water on
tap, and radios in every guest room. Previously
operating as the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, the Beacon Grand ‘s two-level lobby
retains its magnificent original marble walls and recessed mirrors. And cable cars still stop at the front
door.

Beside
a bank of four wood-paneled elevators servicing the guest rooms, a delightful
old-time brass mail chute runs the height of the building. A desk in each room provides a lovely
postcard depicting the hotel that guests can fill out and take to the front
desk, which will then provide the postage and return it so you can deposit it
in the chute.

Guest
room furnishings are clean-lined contemporary, and decor is comfortable with a
nod to the past that includes an old-school brass alarm clock. Striking custom wallpaper features San
Francisco landmarks. All rooms have a
living plant, a clothes steamer, and an Illy coffeemaker.

Beacon Lounge
The hotel’s elegant Beacon Lounge restaurant is on the mezzanine, up a half-flight of
stairs from the dramatic lobby. Also
featuring high ceilings as well as white-marble table tops, meals are served here
all day. Highlights include house-baked
pastries in the morning, and classic cocktails in the evening. Breakfast is particularly enjoyable, with choices
that include a Maine Lobster or Prosciutto Benedict and fresh-fruit
smoothies. A petite enclosed whiskey
library holding bottles from around the world adjoins, as does a small book
library stocked with volumes to browse.
