September, at Alameda County Fairgrounds. 19 $30, 65+ & 12-17 $15; parking $10. No dogs.
The oldest and largest gathering of the clans outside of Scotland, the Scottish Highland Gathering & Games in Pleasanton features a variety of competitions--including the popular Caber Tossing Championships, in which a piece of wood the size of a telephone pole is tossed end-over-end for accuracy. You’ll see sheep dog trials, a kilted mile run, birds of prey demos, and Irish step-dancing, too. And you’ll have the chance to eat shepard’s pie, bangers, pasties, fish & chips, haggis, and way more. Helpful hints: Be sure to read the tickets page carefully, and be sure to print out a map of the grounds.
