William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach

On Hwy. 1, across from Hearst Castle.  Daily dawn-dusk.  Free.  Dogs ok.

In addition to having a nice, uncrowded swimming beach, the William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach park offers picnic tables, barbecue grills, and a 1,000-foot-long fishing pier built in 1878 (no license is required to fish from the pier).  The historic town of San Simeon is here, and a vintage one-room schoolhouse can be viewed from afar.  A vista point provides a good spot for whale watching; bring binoculars.

2020 pandemic update:  Walk-in campsites and museum are closed.  When I visited, this area had very few tourists.
