An open kitchen displays the goods in this modest spot, whose name translates to “chicken coop.” Folks come to for the delicious smoky-flavored grilled chicken (a half-chicken run $11, a whole one $18). I usually get the half-chicken special to go, which for $16.50 includes a side and several slices of bread. My favorite side is the hefty combination salad composed of lettuce, tomato wedges, radish slices, shredded cabbage, and a mix of red and garbanzo beans. Diners are offered a choice of dressings, my favorite being the Italian. More items on the short menu include spicy sausage, rib-eye steak, and rabbit, as well as several soups, more salads, and french fries. It is easy to turn a meal into picnic fare by ordering as take out and then strolling a block down the street to grassy Washington Square Park.
2020 pandemic update: The cooks wear a mask and gloves. An attractive parklet area decorated with a string of lights provides enticing outdoor dining, and to-go orders can be ready in about 10 minutes.
