One of the oldest cemeteries in Nevada County, the large 5-acre Pine Grove Cemetery holds the graves of many area pioneers, Gold Rushers, and war veterans, and it has a special section devoted to veterans of the Spanish American War.  Named in honor of Mary Ann Groves, who was the wife of village undertaker William C. Groves, the cemetery was established in 1851.  Strolling through the quiet grounds takes you past a parade of elaborately carved tombstones, intricate ironwork, and the last known wooden headstones in the area.  Adding color, more than 120 varieties of heirloom roses are planted throughout.  More info.

In October, an annual Day of the Dead Cemetery Walk leads participants on a 4-mile urban walk through Nevada City’s historic cemeteries.
