exterior of Kelley House Museum in Mendocino, California |
This ocean-view house was built by William H. Kelley (Daisy MacCallum's father) in 1861. See MacCallum House. Unfortunately, the gigantic cypress tree that once grew in the front yard was knocked down by a storm, but thankfully the gardens and pond remain. Now a museum, its mission is “to collect, preserve, protect and share the rich history of the Mendocino Coast.” The Kelley House Museum’s restored first floor displays a collection of photos from the 1800s as well as changing exhibits of local artifacts and private collections. A “Then and Now” exhibit shows comparable area scenes photographed approximately 100 years apart, and a Pomo exhibit provides an historical overview of the town’s earliest residents as well as photographs and artifacts from this Native American tribe. The three upstairs bedrooms are furnished with items that belonged to the Kelley family or that are original to the period in which the family lived in the house. Town walking tours are available; fee.
