After driving for long enough to convince yourself that you’ll never find the Stewart's Point Store, it appears like a mirage on the ocean side of the highway. The structure is big and imposing and so, fortunately, is hard to miss. Though there are three antique gas pumps out front, they no longer dispense gas--a reminder to always fill up your tank before starting out on Highway One.

Dating to 1868, and family owned and operated since 1881, this old-time general store is one giant open room with a high ceiling and worn wood floors. Place your lunch order at the counter in back, where a coffee bar and fresh housemade pastries--think cookies, muffins, and more--await, and a selection of sandwiches are made to order with housemade bread. And you know the bread is good because there is a non-stop stream of locals stopping in to pick up a baguette and more local goodies.

I chose the Pilgrim Turkey Sandwich consisting of a huge helping of sliced house-roasted turkey breast, gruyere, sauteed onion, and housemade cranberry sauce that brings pleasant thoughts of a Thanksgiving feast to mind. It comes on a baguette, but I subbed in the whole wheat bread. All the meats are house smoked. Delicious calzones, made-from-scratch soups, salads, and soft-serve ice cream are also options. Veggie and vegan alternatives are available. Quality in general is delightfully high, and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Fitting the description of a general store,
the inventory found on shelves and in repurposed antique ice boxes found around the
interior hold everything from old-time candy bars to artisan cheeses to hand-knit
beanies and neck scarfs. A porch outside
offers bench seating, and glamping sites are available to rent, too.

This is a wonderful place to get very yummy food and treats on your way up to Sea Ranch, or beyond. The bakery in the store is called Twofish, and if you happen to want one of their fabulous bagettes, call ahead to reserve one!
