Anthony Bourdain was fond of the hamburger served here on a sourdough roll. Willie Mays was a fan, too. Their pictures hang on the walls along with many others.  Now I’m adding myself to that list.  Located on the far south end of the Embarcadero, you can work up an appetite by walking.  But diners arrive as well by streetcar, motorcycle, bike, scooter, and car.  Did I leave anything out?

When you step inside, check out the menu on the wall, then follow the line to the counter to order.  Service is fast and friendly.  And burgers are not the only item on the menu.  You can also order a hot dog, fish & chips, or a tuna sandwich.  A veggie burger is also an option, and don’t miss the fries, which are particularly good.  Note that the burger comes with onions, pickles, mayo, and yellow mustard, but no lettuce or tomatoes.  Additionally, breakfast is served all day--think bacon and eggs, pancakes, a breakfast sandwich, a quesadilla, and corned beef hash on weekends.

Seating is inside at small tables, some of which have a ring-side view of the bay outside.  More seating is available in a full bar in back and also out on a large open-air deck right on the bay.  Later in the afternoon, the bar becomes busy serving beer and cocktails.  I hear the Bloody Mary is a favorite.

  1. Such an unpretentious place with a million dollar view. This is my kind of place! I would love to stop by Red’s Java House if ever I find myself in San Francisco.
