Half Moon Bay: Old-timer Main Street Shops; things to do

Old-timer Main Street Shops in Half Moon Bay

Allow time for poking around in some of the eclectic shops on Half Moon Bay’s Main Street.

Cunha’s Country Store

448 Main St.

Completely rebuilt after a devastating 2003 fire, the wood floors in old-time Cunha's Country Store no longer creak and the aisles are wider but it still has the same old-fashioned atmosphere everyone loves.  The store is filled with specialty grocery items as well as everyday needs, and it stocks fresh fruits and vegetables plus has a full-service deli and meat department.  You’ll find items for a picnic (don’t miss the tri-tip sandwich) or snack as well as things you’ll want to take home.  This store also purveys the delicious partially-baked artichoke-garlic bread made Arcangeli Grocery Co. in Pescadero.

Fengari Fiber Arts

415 Main St.

Situated inside a historical building built just after the big quake in 1908, the cozy Fengari Fiber Arts shop purveys fabulous yarns for knitting and crocheting.  Many completed items are available for inspiration, and classes are scheduled.

Half Moon Bay Bakery

514 Main St.

Still using its original 1906 brick ovens, the old-time Half Moon Bay Bakery is known for its Portuguese sweet and French breads and great donuts (my favorite is the raised maple).  Sandwiches are available to go.  This is the perfect stop to pick up a picnic.  Housemade artichoke pesto bread--a meal in itself--eclipses the popular original version available from Arcangeli Grocery Co. in Pescadero.

Half Moon Bay Feed and Fuel

331 Main St.

Established in 1911, Half Moon Bay Feed and Fuel is a traditional farm supply store operating inside an atmospheric old barn.  Touting itself as the “best place in town to pick up chicks,” it is referring to the baby chicken variety.  In addition to having plenty of cute baby chicks in the back, it often has ducklings, bunnies, and other small farm animals to purchase as well as farm, pet, and garden supplies.  You’ll even find something for your domestic pets.  My very favorite item is the big cow bells.
